Feeding the Poor: How Trade Liberalization Reduced Caloric Poverty in Peru

Abstract

This paper demonstrates how trade liberalization reduced caloric poverty in Peru by lowering food prices. Using household consumption data, I show that import liberalization had larger poverty-reducing effects through the food consumption channel than through labor market effects.
