Commodity Booms and Violent Conflict

Abstract

This paper resolves the resource curse puzzle by showing that opportunity costs reduce state-based conflict while rapacity increases non-state conflict. Using Peru’s mining boom, I find that boom-period growth reduced insurgencies by 2.65 percentage points but intensified territorial competition by 0.49 percentage points.
